The rise and rise of visual data

Visual data is nothing new; graphs and images have helped us understand data for thousands of years, from cave paintings to pictogram style road signs to weather maps on television. Infographics as an art form has its origin in print, but an explosion happened in 2009 around digital infographics, and we haven’t looked back since.Production of infographics began to rocket during late 2009, and have continued to escalate in the two years since. While the volume of static infographics has blossomed, so too has the volume of animated infographics, from 454 in 2009 to 9,570 in 2010, and so far this year, 25,700 animated infographics. Animated infographics tell a story in a way that flat infographics can’t. They present statistics, geographical information, and conceptual ideas in an

Social Media News: Issue 31

Google+ to launch brand pages soon In July this year, Google asked brands to hold off using the consumer version of Google+, telling them that a version for businesses and brands would be launching towards the end of the year and it looks like this promise will soon be materialised.Speaking at the Web 2.0 summit in San Francisco, Vic Gundotra, Google's senior vice president, engineering, is reported to have said that brand pages will be arriving on the platform soon, ‛with clever surprises“. Will your company be using Google+ brand pages? Promoted tweets work ‛better than expected“ Last month, the social media world saw confirmation that promoted tweets worked despite being referred to as ‘intrusive’ by many social media analysts. This time around, there is

The Nitro Game: Dan suggests an unorthodox use for Google’s keyword tool

Nitro is a very international organisation; we speak 11 or so languages here, but that doesn’t really cut it. We do multi-lingual keyword research, occasionally we have to do stuff in languages we don’t have. I speak English, Japanese and enough Hebrew to order an ice cream and understand when someone needs their photo taken, but I have so far managed to avoid Russian. It just so happened that yesterday I was polishing off some work in Russian. I love keyword research, so I decided to play a game to make it even more interesting. Instead of batch translating all the keywords from the Google keyword tool using Google translate, I did them individually, and didn’t copy them over to my excel sheet, but typed the answers in manually. I can’t read the Cyrillic alphabet, but even so, the

Welcome to this week’s social media news! 1. iPhone 4S sets off on the right foot After a high-profile launch last week, the new iPhone 4S got off to a shaky start as many were expecting more than a tweaked iPhone 4, which is essentially what the 4S is. It has a faster processor and better camera, along with an improved antenna on the hardware front – and Siri, the voice command assistant, on the software front. However, any underwhelming feelings tech critics may have had didn’t translate over to punters as the iPhone 4S steamed to a record 1 million pre-orders in its first 24 hours on pre-sale (where the iPhone 4 managed 600,000). Are you impressed with the iPhone 4S or still not convinced? Let us know by commenting below. 2. Twitter to Reformat all URLs with T.co Twitter

Hi Everyone, Here goes the first blog post from the latest Intern at Nitro… no pressure then. I spent a considerable amount of time scouring the internet looking for inspiration for this post. Anticipation of my first day started to steadily build up on the previous weekend. Is it the end of Adobe Flash?

In recent years a wave of consumer electronics such as tablet PCs and smartphones have appeared on the market setting off a generation of gadgets that feature a platform for audio-visual media including games, music, books, and web content. Although these trendy little goodies feature certain functionalities that are comparable to those of a laptop computer, but can these clever little portables really replace them fully?Currently the answer is no. Not necessarily meaning that they will never be able to surpass them, but a step closer to the solution could be around the corner. One problem feature that seems to affect some of the latest portables is not being able to support Flash content on their web browsers. Only a handful of tablet PCs are in fact able to support the Adobe Plugin such

Facebook's "people are talking about this" metric explained

Facebook has undergone a radical transformation over the past couple of weeks. This transformation involved changes to the news feed, privacy settings and adding a ‘subscribe’ option to profiles, just to name a few. Most of these new features are pretty self-explanatory and have been adopted with relative ease however, the social network’s new ‛people are talking about this“ metric left many users puzzled. This new ‛people are talking about this“ number is pulled from a variety of interactions that occur on Facebook over the past seven-day period. The different interactions that make up the ‛people are talking about this“ metric are any pieces of content that users share in their timeline. This includes: - liking a page - posting to a page's wall - linking, commenting or
